About Subsurface Press

Exploring what lies beneath perception.

Subsurface Press is an independent literary studio dedicated to exploring the hidden architecture of being — the currents that move beneath thought, perception, and matter itself.

Founded by author and engineer Rex Wiig, the press publishes works that blur the boundaries between science and story, intellect and intuition, engineering and empathy. Each project — whether book, essay, or crafted object — is an inquiry into what connects us: energy, consciousness, and the fragile machinery of the human body and mind.

From the quiet endurance of Thank God for Oxes to the philosophical depths of Beyond the Grid and The Current, Subsurface Press is guided by a simple premise: that truth often lives just below the visible — waiting to be uncovered with patience, precision, and care.

We believe ideas are living things — built, tested, and refined much like the systems they describe.
Here, words are engineered with intention.
Objects are designed with meaning.
And stories serve as blueprints for awareness.

Subsurface Press is more than a publisher. It is an ongoing conversation — between science and soul, memory and imagination, the measurable and the mysterious.

Our work lives below the surface.
Where thought becomes matter, and matter becomes story.

BOOKS/UPCOMING TITLES

At Subsurface Press, every book explores the systems that shape life — mechanical, biological, and spiritual.
From the silent collapse of the stomach to the hidden geometry of perception, each work examines how feedback, failure, and awareness create the conditions for growth.

Thank God for Oxes™ Coming Soon — Fall 2026
Thank God for Oxes™ a reflection on the body as teacher — Thank God for Oxes™ explores what happens when the body stops digesting — and starts teaching.
A journey through autoimmune illness, science, and rediscovery, this book reveals how loss of stomach acid can ignite a deeper understanding of connection, chemistry, and the quiet intelligence of the gut.

A Life Jolted™ Coming Soon — Spring 2027
When the body says no. The story that led to Thank God for Oxes.
Life Jolted™ A memoir of collapse and recovery — A catastrophic electrical failure inside the body.
A Life Jolted™ chronicles the moment when control disappeared — and the long process of rediscovering purpose through patience, science, and self-awareness.
It’s a memoir about rebuilding systems, relationships, and identity after the lights go out.
Told with the candor of a patient and the precision of an engineer, it asks what remains when the body and mind both crash — and what can be rebuilt from the wreckage.

Beyond the Grid™ Project Release — Late 2027
We don’t see the world as it is — we see the grid our brains construct.
After losing the ability to calculate or comprehend simple numbers, Wiig begins to perceive the world as geometry and rhythm.
Beyond the Grid™ Beyond the Grid examines how the brain’s mathematical scaffolding both enables and limits perception.
Drawing on neuroscience, philosophy, and personal experience, Wiig explores what happens when that scaffolding dissolves.
Where equations once ruled, new awareness arises — a meditative sensitivity to the hidden geometries that shape how we see, move, and connect.
It’s an invitation to step beyond the brain’s algorithms into the living field of perception itself.

The Current™ Project Release — Winter 2027
A cinematic exploration of energy, memory, and the phenomenon of consciousness beyond the brain.
The Current follows a multidisciplinary investigation into consciousness as an external, energetic field rather than an internal property of the brain.
Combining neuroscience, quantum theory, and narrative storytelling, Wiig weaves science and spirituality into a coherent hypothesis: that life itself may be a distributed antenna for awareness.
From the Amazon rainforest to the physics lab, the journey leads to one provocative question — what if consciousness was never inside us at all?

Lessons from Below™ Coming Soon — 2026
Discipline. Purpose. Connection. Pressure reveals character.
Drawn from six years of submarine service and decades of leadership in aerospace and entrepreneurship, Lessons from Below delivers hard-won insights through stories from beneath the surface — literal and figurative.
Each lesson, from “Pressure” to “Surfacing,” is paired with reflection prompts and practical exercises.
It’s a manual for anyone navigating the depths of challenge, change, or reinvention.

Let’s start a conversation below the surface.
Whether you’re a reader, collaborator, or member of the press, we’d love to hear from you.
